Free Bags, Award Rebates, Citi AA Cards Now Have More Benefits! Keep or Cancel?

Who doesn’t love it when cards get MORE benefits?! This is great news, especially in a time when we have seen some card sign up bonuses reduced, and some mileage programs lose some of their value. Banks and Credit Card Issuing companies like Chase, American Express, Citi, Bank of America, Barclays, & Capital One have become exceedingly more competitive in recent months with card benefits. I hope this is a sign that we will see more benefits from Barclays & Bank of America cards.

Effective immediately, if you currently have or are approved for the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature, Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard, Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard, or the Citi Select AAdvantage American Express card you now have these benefits as a cardholder:
– Receive 10% back on award redemptions, UP TO 10,000 miles refunded per year. Refunds are automatic, but take 8 weeks to credit.
- 1 Free Checked Bag for yourself & 4 companions
- Free priority boarding
- 25% off in-flight purchases
- No mileage earning cap (used to be capped at 100,000 earned a year through spending)
- $100 AA flight credit if you spend $30,000 on the card in a year

What This Means For Me…

Obviously you can see that my favorite new benefit would be the 10% back on award redemptions up to 10,000 points back a year. That means if I book 2 award flights that are 50,000 miles each, for example off-peak to Tokyo, Japan, I’ll receive 5,000 miles back for each one. Pretty awesome benefit. 10,000 miles is worth the annual fee to me, and I do fly a couple of revenue AA tickets per year, so the free checked bag benefit will be nice as well.

I was going to call to cancel one or both of my Visa & American Express AA credit cards this week b/c my $89 Annual Fee was due. I may have a harder time getting a statement credit now that they’ve announced these new benefits. If they don’t offer me anything then I will cancel the American Express, and keep the Visa. These new benefits are worth the Annual Fee to me due to my revenue AA flights, and that I plan to redeem AA miles too.

  1. Yeah man, this looks like a good deal! The checked bags alone is sweet. When Becca and I fly, it's like $25 per bag… That's $50 each time. Two times and it pays for itself. Going to have to rethink if I'm going to cancel or not as well. :) Thanks for sharing!

  2. wonderful post.Never knew this, regards for letting me know. is my blog.
